As you may already know, Edgar Benjamin founded this facility, the only black nursing home in the state. He graduated from BU Law School 5 years before Plessy v. Ferguson. The Edgar Benjamin continues to play an important role in the minority Boston community. Nursing students from Roxbury Community College do their practical training at the facility. In addition to being a nursing home, the facility serves as a rehab center and offers hospice care in a setting that makes minorities and all comfortable. As a stand alone facility, it is a great effort to keep the facility going.
It was a very elegant affair, with ladies from the board wearing 1920s inspired gowns and hairstyles complete with feathers and flowers. Some of our members were in attendance: Chuck Walker who serves as historian to the group; Tony Ellison and his wife; and MBLA founding member Norm Huggins, a Suffolk Superior Clerk Magistrate and former chairman of the Edgar Benjamin board. Charles Ogletree received an award and Sen Wilkerson served as the emcee. Kenneth Guscotte, the honorary consul for Jamaica and his family were honored for their outstanding decades long support of the facility.

Reception 11:30a.m. | Luncheon 12:30 p.m.
Sheraton Boston Hotel
39 Dalton Street, Boston
Keynote Speaker: Neal K. Katyal
Professor of Law, Georgetown University Law Center
Professor Neal K. Katyal has taken part in the most contentious constitutional battles of the last decade. In the 2000 election dispute, he served as co-counsel to Vice-President Al Gore. When the Supreme Court heard landmark Michigan affirmative-action cases, Prof. Katyal represented the deans of several private law schools. In the Hamdan v. Rumsfeld case, he successfully argued that military tribunals at Guantanamo Bay violated international law, domestic military law and the constitutional separation of powers. Walter Dellinger, former Solicitor General, stated that Hamden is "… simply the most important decision on presidential power and the rule of law ever. Ever."
